Luce

A $20.10 prix fixe lunch menu at a one Michelin star restaurant in San Francisco? Yeah, why not! (Website link... heads-up: beware of website music.)

First course: beet salad. Fresh and fantastic.
Second course: short rib and spaghettini. Simple and delicious.
Third course: hazelnut pots de creme. A sweet finish!

Wedding Coverage | Pricing + Q&A

AN INTRODUCTION

So you're getting married - congratulations! While it's definitely one of the most joyous occasions in any person's life, I understand that it can also be incredibly stressful trying to plan and coordinate everything.

The point of this post is not to stress you out even more - I hope! I just want to provide as much information about my services, including actual prices, and answer frequently asked questions preemptively. If it helps you, yay! If it does not, please do get in touch to get clarification.

"GENERALLY SPEAKING, HOW DOES ONE HIRE A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?"
  1. Make sure the photographer you want to hire is available on your wedding date. Tell them your wedding date.
  2. If they are available, and you come to agreement with prices and products, then you would sign an agreement and pay the deposit to secure their service.
  3. Before the wedding date, be sure to settle and confirm all payments, wedding information and details.
  4. After your wedding, your photographer will provide you with the photos.
Yes, as easy as 1, 2, 3... 4!

PRICING

Your photography investment really depends on the length of coverage you need and which amazing products you'd like to commemorate your special day with. Coverage includes me as your photographer and afterwards, an online gallery to easily share your photos with friends and family as well as a DVD of all edited, full-resolution files. Everything you need in a nutshell, and that is the baseline.

For 2012, my coverage rate is $300 per hour with a two-hour minimum. So, for example, if you need coverage for 6 hours, it's $1,800.

QUESTIONS? ANSWERS!

When did you start shooting weddings?
I got my start in wedding photography by second-shooting for more established photographers. I started second-shooting for Chung Photo and Ziba Studio in July 2007. I shot my first solo wedding in April 2008.

Do you have a second shooter?
No, I do not. I can definitely have a second shooter tag along with me on the day of your wedding if that's important to you for a nominal fee. However, I prefer to shoot by myself. I've been told I'm a cerebral person and I am in my head a lot, so I'm very comfortable working alone.

What kind of equipment do you use?
I shoot using Canon DSLR equipment and edit using Adobe Lightroom. I've been to weddings where guests have equally-impressive, if not even more bad-ass equipment than I do! It's quite a sight to behold! But at the end of the day, as you probably already know, it's the quality of the photographs that really matters and not how big your lens is.

Can I see an entire collection of images from a wedding?
Heck yeah! Any photographer can show you his or her best 10 shots. You should always check out an entire wedding to make sure they know their stuff. You can see one here, along with my various album designs.

How would you describe your style?
My photos are natural with a dash of warmth. I want to show you images that reflect the world just as it appears but filtered through my eyes, which means there will be extra light and extra love. My shooting style is totally laid-back and covert; you'll hardly know I'm there, until you see the images.

Do people actually like the stuff you produce? Do you have any client testimonials to share?
Yes, and yes! I have a Yelp page that you can check out

Do you have a list of vendors that you would recommend?
Yes, and you can view that list by clicking here.

How many photos can I expect to see in my online gallery?
The final number of photos you'll be presented with varies, but I would estimate a final count of between 300 to 500 edited images for an average 6-hour wedding.

What does your wedding agreement look like?
Here's the legal verbiage (verbatim) from the wedding agreement:
PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATION. The Client is entitled to professional photographic service provided by Chung Nguyen with digital camera equipment. In the event of equipment failure, a backup camera will be on hand. MODEL RELEASE. The Client permits the Photographer the rights to use and publish photographs of the Client for editorial, trade, advertising, and any other purpose, in print and online. LIMIT OF LIABILITY. In the very unlikely event that the photographer is injured or becomes too ill to photograph the event, the Photographer will make every effort to secure a replacement photographer. If the situation should occur and a suitable replacement is not found, responsibility and liability is limited to the return of all payments received for the event package. The Photographer takes the utmost care with respect to exposure, transportation, and processing the photographs. However, in the unlikely event photographs have been lost, stolen, or destroyed for reasons within or beyond the Photographer's control, the Photographer liability is limited to the return of all payments received for the event package. CANCELLATION POLICY. If, for any reason, the event needs to be cancelled or rescheduled, the Photographer requests at least a 72-hour notice of cancellation via phone (408-532-5880) or email (chung@chungnguyen.com). In the case of cancellation, all payment already received (minus the deposit and any travel expenses already incurred) will be refunded in within one week.

Why should I pick you?
Three main reasons: (1) You like the photos that I produce and want a similar style for your wedding. (2) I'm within your price range. And (3) you wouldn't mind having me hanging around you all day on your wedding day.

At the end of the day, I can't profess that I'm widely published or a well-decorated photographer. All I can say is that I care about producing the best work that I can for my clients. If I can make you and your family and friends smile along the way, I'll consider my job complete.

Happy planning!

3-on-3 #10: A Few Pictures Taken Here & There

Skies in Las Vegas (at their Chinatown - who knew they had one?).

A wall in Berkeley (near Cheese Board Pizza).

And light clouds at the Stanford Dish.

The Coffee Ritual

Ever since my roommate introduced her coffeemaker to the household at large, I've been brewing my own coffee at home. I also have a little Bodum French Press that I inherited, but there's something about the coffee machine that I've always loved.

So, 1/4-cup of grounds and 2 cups of water (tap all the way! mostly because we don't have a water filter... :D). Once it's done, about one tablespoon of organic brown sugar and enough creamer until it's a light brown color and....

Enjoy!

P.S.
I'm not lactose intolerant or anything, but it's hard to live in San Francisco without being bombarded by vegans who'll try to talk you out of eating dairy, especially from big farm machines that don't treat their cows well and pump them full of antibiotics, etc. I don't know if I'll ever give up cheese (gasp!), but here, Vegans of the World, here is my delicious compromise to you! (And yes, the SO Delicious coconut milk product is, for the most part, quite delicious!)

Another Kind of Green

Here are some photos from around my 'hood. It's truly amazing the amount of gardening that can be compacted in a two-feet by two-feet "lawn". And with no access to a watering hose, no less. To the folks with green thumbs in the city, I salute you!

WHITE, by Vera Wang

I must admit that I am a huge fan of wedding gowns. They're intricately designed, they're beautiful, and they're a special garment so, everyone looks great in them! I just read from The Wedding Chicks that Vera Wang has a new line of affordable wedding dresses available through David Bridal. And they look amazing! With prices ranging from $600 to $1300, they really are a (relative) bargain!

3-on-3 #9: Domestic Opulence

I'd like to go ahead and preface this post with the acknowledgment that I truly have everything in the kitchen that I could need. (Microwave? Check. Fridge? Check. Unnecessary but awesome to have toaster? Enthusiastic check!) That being said, these are definitely "nice to have" items that I would classify under the heading of "domestic opulence"!

First, we have a collection of hand soap and lotion from Williams-Sonoma. No, it won't break any banks per se, but at $30 for a bottle of hand soap and hand lotion? It's an extravagant purchase.

Second, there's the 7" santoku knife from Global. A previous roommate had a set of Global knives and they were - hands down - some of the best knives I've ever used in my life. I'd gladly settle for just one utilitarian knife by them, but even so, it's $120 for this bad boy. Ouch.

Finally, not really opulent in price per se, but there's just something about having tea or coffee in a cup with a saucer. So fancy! (And, finally, a place to rest the teabag; I don't like my teas too strong.)

As someone who's unlikely to do a big wedding with gift registries and all, I guess this is me exploring my nest-building intuition. Now that it's out of my system, time to indulge in something a little more productive: food porn! :)

Your DVD of Images

Since a lot of my photography coverage includes a DVD of images to you, I figure I should share some advice. This is not the be-all, end-all of what you should do with your images, but this is just what I would do, and I hope it's helpful to you.

Please, back it up.

The actual disc itself is worthless except for the files it contains. As soon as I get the disc, I would copy all of the files to my computer (copy #1), make an additional copy of the disc to store in a dark, dry, not too hot, not too cold place (copy #2), maybe even store the files online with a service like Dropbox (copy #3), and even a USB storage drive or external hard-drive (copy #4).

Back it up!

Do not expect your photographer to have the files still readily available for you a year or two down the line. You don't know what their policy is for keeping these images on file so take the opportunity to ensure that your images are safe and sound. So, say it with me now:

Back it up! :)

3-on-3 #8: My Media Life

There are two current 30 Rock references that Dima (the boyfriend) and I keep repeating to each other. Now, you're (kind of) in on the joke, too:

Whenever someone makes a bad suggestion, go ahead and make this signature hand gesture. :)

Pretty much whenever this song comes on the radio, we'll stare at each other while giving one another very meaningful looks to manipulate "the audience." (I don't know what audience, though.)

Finally, I heard this song on the radio a month ago and I love it. Love it. Because some days are really cruddy and it's nice to think you'll have someone to come home to that you actually like.... :)

A Little Baby Girl

I photographed this little baby recently as part of her grandma's birthday wish for family portraits. The whole gang was there and I'll share those photos soon. But for now, let's enjoy the funny tongue sticking out. And, oh wow, I absolutely love the wisps of hair underneath her headband.

Cuteness. Overload.

3-on-3 #7: My BFF

Sorry for this sad attempt at a 3-on-3. There's only one thing to share here, which is a photo of my BFF, Ms. Fiona Orange Nguyen. We call her "Fi."

She loves loves loves sticking her head out the window while in the car. She's comfortable at speeds below 35 MPH, so I'm usually more than happy to indulge in a little speed limit obedience for her benefit.

Happy Tuesday!
