Hello! I have been shooting people with Canons since 2007. I'm a closet optimist and romantic with a dry wit and a silver tongue. I love strong coffee and dark chocolate, and enjoy a slow-paced life with my human and furry BFF's. Welcome to my little site!

3-on-3 #15: Everything's Not Lost

Here are a few quotes that popped into my head this week:
  • “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” Lao Tzu
  • "...for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." Hamlet
  • “Money never made a man happy yet, nor will it. The more a man has, the more he wants. Instead of filling a vacuum, it makes one.” Benjamin Franklin
When I was a kid/tween/teen, I was always amazed at the mess generated by my family's dinners. With 2 parents, 6 kids, 4 spouses, and 10 tiny ones, we used a lot of pots, pans, plates, bowls, and utensils to feed everyone for one big meal when we got together. What was equally amazing was how quickly things were cleaned up after we were done with dinner. If one person was in charged of rinsing and another of clearing the table, the task was done so quickly.

I suppose that's why I love Lao Tzu's quote so much. Sure, any task can look really daunting (e.g. BIG SINK OF DIRTY DISHES) before you tackle it, but just take a little step and eventually you'll get where you need to go. In this case, toward a clean kitchen for my parents. :)

Headshots!

I love shooting headshots because they're quick and painless for everyone involved. (I like to assume, expect, and consequently receive the latter since grown-ups are involved.) What are headshots for? Acting, modeling, and oftentimes also great for online dating. I've done the online dating thing before and I can assure you that a great photo goes a long, long way toward getting someone to say "yes" to a date.

Well, these twins aren't using their photos for online dating, but for their agency. I overwhelmed them with the diverse selection of photos, which I love doing every now and then. What can I say? They had way too many different expressions to pick from! (It's a great problem to have, by the way.) We photographed in the span of an hour and all these different backdrops were achieved within a two-minute walk from each other. I love downtown areas. Anyway, enjoy some images:

3-on-3 #14: Simply Breakfast

Something I hate: being hungry. Something I love: breaking the fast that occurs with sleep. Behold, my own personal simple breakfast.

Cup of coffee. Toast from TJ's split the polite way (i.e., diagonally) and topped with almond butter and hummus.

Mr. Hudson

I know, I know. How cute is he???

Muttville: Dorit, Little Miss :-P

It's probably the tongue-out action all the time, but Dorit is stinkin' ADORABLE! She is so chill and so sweet. I have no doubt that she would make a loyal companion for anyone who's sweet enough to love her for the ball of cuteness that she is.

Muttville: Mary, Little Miss Shih zhu

Mary is available for adoption through Muttville. She's only 9 years old and her benign tumors have been removed so she's ready to go home.

When I was trying to photograph her, she wouldn't sit still, so I had to give in and cuddle around with her first. (I know - the things I have to suffer! :-D) Normally I hate it when dogs lick my face but Mary is teeny-tiny and it feels like a kitty-cat licking me. SO CUTE.

So, yes, you should totally adopt Mary if you're looking for a small dog.... xoxo

3-on-3 #13: Photographers I *heart*

The full list is long, but here are three wedding photographers I admire (and blog-stalk):

Her images are so elegant and timeless (I'm sure I can throw in a couple of other adjectives like "beautiful" and "stunning," but those first two definitely capture her style compared with other photographers). I've also purchased one of her think books, which have an incredible amount of detail regarding how she captures and edits an image. Susan's work is pure eye-candy for me whenever she blogs.... :)

He specializes in a lot of off-camera flashes and light painting, both of which I think are really cool (though I do not do them myself). I love that his blog is a dash of motivational, inspirational, and just sheer goofiness at times. Although I'll be completely transparent and say that he may or may not be on this list because he's a certified hunk!

OK, here are the folks who, if possible, I would absolutely hire to shoot my wedding. I mean, the images are truly solid and I'm just impossibly in love with them. On top of that, Ms. Bobbi goes all out with her cakes - who doesn't love that? PLUS - as if that weren't enough - she answers a ton of "fan" questions on Formspring as well. How she finds the time to do all this? I don't know, but I adore her all the more for it.

3-on-3 #12: My Whole Foods

In spite of myself, I can be found at my local Whole Foods more frequently as of late. It's convenient and they have a lot of organic, local products so, I told myself I would sacrifice massive quantity for quality instead. But thankfully, I haven't had to sacrifice on taste. A few notes I've made for myself:
  • Don't bother with stuff that says "light on sodium" because I'm just gonna go home and add salt when I find out it's bland anyway.
  • Chocolove never gets boring. Almonds & Sea Salt Chocolate. So good.
  • A naan pizza (which sounds like a non-pizza, apparently) is very filling, despite its diminutive size.
  • I'm lazy and would rather consume most of my fruits and veggies in juice form. No peeling involved with juices, which is more appealing (pun ABSOLUTELY intended).
  • Quinoa is a pain in the butt to rinse. If you can find it clean and ready-to-go, go with that. But otherwise, this "pseudocereal" is such a great base for a lot of foods and is so good for you, too. I've made egg salad with it and plan on using it as a base for all my curry eating as well. Fantastic!
  • Finally, if you've ever wondered what $20 gets you at Whole Foods, here it is:

Muttville Adoptable : Bert & Ernie

From Bert & Ernie (slightly paraphrased and loosely translated from Doginese):
We were meant to be together all our lives. (Bros for life! Woof! Woof!) Won't you take us into your loving home? We promise to greet you at the door ENTHUSIASTICALLY! (That's the only adverb we know, to be perfectly honest.) We'll also be so loving you would start to wonder, "How did I live without this sweetness in my life before now?"

Really.

So if you're wanting a little comedy with a lot of love and unrelenting devotion, I hope you'll come to meet us. Because we'd love to meet you!

URGENT: NEED A FOSTER HOME TOGETHER!!

Goofy and adorable just like the Sesame Street characters. These bonded cocker spaniels came in from Solano County shelter where they were originally picked up from a very neglectful situation. Bert and Ernie do not have a mean bone in their bodies Even though they were covered head to toe in heavy matted fur they still wanted to do nothing but kiss and cuddle with all of the Muttville volunteers. They are so happy to be here! They came in with the worst cherry eye, but now it has been fixed. Stay tuned for updated photos of them without cherry eye! They are healthy and well adjusted.
they are housetrained, though they love to be next to you on the couch or in your lap!

At eight years old Bert and Ernie love to snuggle together and clean each other so they must go home together.

3-on-3 #11: A Doggy Life

Bert and I cuddling on the couch at Muttville HQ.

During my Corporate America, cube-dwelling days, I often fantasized about moving to San Francisco, working at the SF SPCA while doing photography. It's been a little while since I moved to San Francisco but I never landed that job at the SF SPCA. Regardless, my life has definitely been filled with a lot of doggy action.

First of all, I wanted to walk a dog and found a volunteer opportunity to do it through PAWS. I love PAWS and I've made some wonderful friends through it, four- and two-legged. You can read my blog post for PAWS here:
Walking Radar

[Editor's note: Chung Nguyen is a PAWS Volunteer who has been walking a dog named Radar for a client named Jade. Daniel Marlay is the Director of Volunteer Services at PAWS. If you would be interested in walking dogs for PAWS, see our Dog-walking Volunteer Page.]

Radar

When I finally moved back to San Francisco and really settled in (as opposed to continuing to crash on my friend's couch), I felt a little lost. My previous life involved a rigid 9-to-6 schedule with built-in social interactions with coworkers. I was now living in a new city, in a new place with new people, and felt a little adrift.

Plus, I really missed my dog.

At first I wondered if random strangers would let me walk their dog, just to cure this need for brief doggy companionship. Then I realized that was weird. And then I thought about all this time I had on my hands and no where to really apply myself. And that's where VolunteerMatch comes in, and I was introduced to PAWS.

From the get-go, I had a great experience with PAWS. Daniel does a wonderful job of streamlining the volunteer signup and orientation process, but never loses the personal touch as we proceed. My previous experience with a lot of non-profit organizations has been a mismanagement of volunteers, not capitalizing volunteers' altruism and consequently making them feel indifferent to the cause in the end. Daniel explained what PAWS was all about and I absolutely love the cause (in summation: "PAWS improves the health and well-being of disabled individuals and the animals in their lives").

Jade

My volunteer position is to walk a chiweenie (chihuahua-dachshund mix) named Radar for his owner/guardian/human-mama Jade. Radar is a funny character. He's a small dog with a big personality. He loves to wrestle around with his small buddies at Duboce Park and after months of taking him there once a week, I've gotten to know a lot of the interesting dogs there as well. Radar absolutely hates skateboards and sporadically barks at bicyclists. Radar is a food whore. He's pretty chill when you get him by himself, though you wouldn't be able to tell from the way he plays and wrestles with the other dogs. He also has the softest belly I've ever rubbed. Ever.

It's always fun to walk him around the neighborhood and have people down the block yell out, "Hey, it's Radar!"

Radar is a bit of a superstar like that.

And then there's Jade. Jade is truly one of the sweetest, kindest, nicest people I've met in the city to date. Because of her age and health, she wasn't able to take Radar out for his walks and I could tell that it broke her heart. It consoled her that there was a team of people who were able and, for one reason or another, completely willing to take Radar out on his walks on her behalf. At the end of every walk, she would very warmly thank me for taking Radar out. Little did she know, I was actually the one who came out on top in this relationship.

In the past year that I've been walking Radar, I was able to force myself to break away from the computer. I was able to interact with people that I otherwise would not, and they're all so wonderful, different, and interesting. And, let's face it, Radar wasn't the only one who needed the exercise.

I'm tremendously thankful that fate brought me to PAWS and, consequently, to Jade and Radar. My life has been all the more positive for this experience and I can honestly say that I am all the more spiritually fulfilled for it. I'll leave you with this quote that I think is simply oh-so-true: “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole" (Roger Caras).

- Chung Nguyen

And then I randomly saw a flyer months and months ago about an organization that specifically rescued older dogs. As someone who adopted a "senior" dog, I loved Muttville immediately. I currently photograph the dogs on a biweekly basis and absolutely adore the opportunity to cuddle (see photo above).

Finally, since I take photos of the dogs at Muttville, I thought I would post photos of the pets available for adoption. As someone who adopted a senior dog, I must say that she's made my life better in every way. And others should enjoy the same joy that I've been blessed with!
